Over the last few weeks, Unity announced the launch of the Unity CLI followed by the official Unity Plugin, supporting the idea that Unity should meet developers in the tools they've already chosen and in the places where they work. With 3 billion Unity-powered games downloaded monthly, the CLI and plugins now sit inside the agents where a growing number of developers start projects. Game development is increasingly beginning in a terminal with an agent already open rather than in a browser on a download page.
Unity's goal is to make the creation experience better and easier. The company doesn't choose which coding agent developers will use, but supports them regardless of their choice. In the AI space, tools keep changing as models evolve. In August, OpenAI reported that Codex had reached 15 million active users, while Claude Code held its position as the most widely used AI coding agent.
Examples of what developers are creating with AI tools and the Unity editor include:
- Cam Ayres, Sr. Manager of Industry Solutions at Unity, built a Simon Says game using Claude Code and the Unity CLI
- Andrew Walko, Applied AI at OpenAI, built a Unity cityscape with Codex GPT-6 Astra and the Unity CLI
Unity's Official Plugin Available for Grok Build
Unity announced that the official Unity Plugin is available for Grok Build, making it the third coding agent to carry Unity's official engineering guidance. Grok Build receives the same 30+ skills Unity engineers wrote for Claude Code and Codex, covering UI Toolkit and uGUI, 2D and tilemaps, URP and Shader Graph, audio, navigation and physics, IAP and LevelPlay, multiplayer, web, and localization. All three plugins are maintained from a single repository, so updates flow to all three agents.
Getting started requires one command in the terminal with nothing to configure and nothing to copy across when moving to a new machine. The plugin works with Unity 6 and above. Documentation covers setup, and some examples of Grok Build with Unity are already available.
The skills in the official plugins for Claude Code, Codex, and Grok Build are identical. Whether on a team or using multiple agents, Claude Code, Codex, or Grok Build will follow the same Unity guidance for the same questions. To install, use the CLI command: grok plugin install Unity-Technologies/unity-agent-plugin --trust
What's Next
In October, Unity will publish data on how developers are using the CLI and plugin with these agents. The company is also exploring other agents for potential plugin availability. In July, Unity promised developers could point their preferred coding agent at Unity and the company would meet them there. Extending the official plugin to multiple coding agents covers most terminals developers are likely to have open, and the evolution will continue so agent choice never constrains creativity with the Unity engine.
Grok Build Plugin Details
Unity’s broader product documentation says the installation also provides the Unity CLI and first-party MCP server for live Editor control, although the announcement itself emphasizes the shared engineering guidance and skill set.
