RuneScape is coming to Xbox for the first time in its 25-year history. RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival RPG set in the franchise's universe, launches September 15, 2026, with support for 1-4 players in solo or co-op modes.

The game is set on Ashenfall, a hidden continent within Gielinor. Players take on the role of an ordinary adventurer working to level skills from 1-99 and ultimately confront Queen Kuldra, the Dragon Queen. The continent is populated with enemies including Black Knights, Zogres, Chromatic Dragons, and Kalphites, along with perilous vaults and boundless mysteries.
Progression centers on mastering martial, magical, and mundane crafts. The game features “Skill Spells”—magical abilities that aid survival, such as summoning a spectral axe to fell trees instantly, blinking away from danger, transmuting bones into peaches, conjuring tornadoes of fish, exploding ore veins, and jumping higher than normal.
Players can build homes using hundreds of unique building pieces to fortify themselves against dragon threats. The building system offers countless customization possibilities.
Over the past 18 months, the game's map has tripled in size, adding three new expansive regions with area bosses, material upgrades, and iconic RuneScape gear. Jagex has committed to an expansive post-launch roadmap extending into 2027 and beyond.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds will be available on Xbox and Xbox Game Pass.
Key Differences from the MMORPG
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is not a direct sequel to RuneScape's MMORPG formula but a standalone survival-RPG spin-off. It shifts the series from a persistent point-and-click MMO to an open-world experience focused on gathering, crafting, base building, survival and third-person combat, while retaining RuneScape-style skill progression, quests, creatures and lore. Players explore Ashenfall, an undiscovered continent, alone or in co-op with up to four players rather than inhabiting the established MMORPG world of Gielinor.
The progression model also changes substantially: Dragonwilds keeps levelable skills but adds survival systems, hundreds of construction pieces and magic that can accelerate otherwise routine tasks, such as felling trees or mining ore. At launch, the game included nine skills and Skill Spells, while later updates expanded the skill roster; its console release also introduced Fishing, level caps of 99, an overhauled Runecrafting system and dedicated-server support.
