Open source fights back

Mozilla and Mistral Partner to Bring Privacy-First AI to Firefox

Mozilla and Mistral just announced a partnership that reshapes how AI enters the browser. Firefox Smart Window, now powered by Mistral's models, promises something increasingly rare: an AI assistant that prioritizes your privacy over data harvesting. The collaboration signals a bold move to prove open-source technology can compete in consumer AI without sacrificing user control.

Today, Mozilla and Mistral announced a partnership to bring privacy, control, and choice to AI-powered web browsing. Firefox Smart Window (beta), Mozilla's AI browsing assistant, is now powered by Mistral models. Smart Window helps users make sense of complex searches, remember important information they've clicked away from, and source information based on their browser tabs. Mistral will power Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year.

Mistral and Firefox join forces to deliver open, privacy-focused AI browsing for global users — Mistral

The partnership pairs two open-source advocates to bring Mistral's models to consumers worldwide. Mistral is fine-tuning its AI systems on regional languages, dialects, and cultural context so users receive responses tailored to their local nuance.

AI is becoming part of how people experience the web every day. We want to make sure that doesn't mean people are chained to one company's self-serving pipeline. With the browser sitting at the heart of the web and online experience, it should be a place where different AI providers can compete and open source has a seat at the table.

— Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla

Why the partnership matters

Open technology needs open distribution. Mozilla has spent more than two decades fighting for an open web, while Mistral has released open-weight, frontier models since its first release. The partnership demonstrates the potential of open source to serve people globally.

AI optimized for local countries and cultures. Rather than exporting a one-size-fits-all solution, Mistral fine-tunes models on regional languages and dialects so users receive AI experiences that feel native to them.

User control and privacy by design. Firefox has long prioritized control and privacy, values Mistral shares. Privacy protections are built into Smart Window: conversations aren't saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and Mistral has committed to zero data retention.

Sovereign AI for consumers. While Mistral traditionally focuses on enterprise, this partnership extends its technology to end users worldwide, making open, user-controlled AI accessible beyond businesses.

This partnership represents two open source advocates working together to bring Mistral's scientific innovations to Mozilla's consumers around the world. Together, we are bringing privacy, control and choice to AI-powered web browsing.
