Nowhere Stays Familiar

Kill Block Remaps Every Match With 500+ Layouts

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 brings a Multiplayer map that never sits still. Kill Block rebuilds its battlefield from modular sections between matches, so familiar corners turn into unfamiliar fights. Mastery may need to be relearned, and the Central Slab may hold the key.

Kill Block is a new Multiplayer map in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 that reconfigures between matches, so teams have to rethink routes, sightlines, and combat spaces on the fly. The map sits inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, which is built from three modular sections: two outer areas called End Slabs and one central space called Central Slab. Each match, these sections recombine into new configurations. The article notes that more than 500 configurations are possible at launch, with layouts changing between matches and throughout rounds to shift cover placement and pacing. Where most static maps give every match the same geography, Kill Block is designed to keep players re-learning the battlefield.

The map supports both 3v3 and the new 10v10 Gunfight mode at launch, with future support planned for more core Multiplayer modes. The Call of Duty Blog says most Slabs are entirely new, while others draw on iconic locations from Modern Warfare history.

The writer played Kill Block during the Modern Warfare 4 Beta last month and found the constant cycle of combat refreshing. Because the map changes between rounds, teams start on a more even footing, each trying to learn corners and find defensive posts as quickly as possible. The writer's advice was to learn the Central Slab first. Because it links to the adjacent Slabs, it usually hosted the main encounter points, with combat coming in from multiple angles. Working outward from there was more effective than trying to absorb the whole randomized layout at once.

Each Slab is rectangular and often follows a familiar footprint. Each is self-contained but has openings that allow match flow into adjacent Slabs. Expect urban streets, military compounds, shipping containers, and more, with chokepoints, low openings, and vantage points that sometimes extend across the entire map. Cover includes parked trucks, burned-out tanks and cars, concrete blocks, barriers, and walls. Some doors can be shot open, barged through, or opened slowly for stealth. Markers such as construction signs, grenade marks, arrows, and numbers help players recognize Slabs they have played before, so the writer recommends taking mental notes of them.

Several Slabs recreate classic locations: Crash from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Storage Town from Call of Duty: Warzone‘s Verdansk map, and Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019). The Call of Duty Blog confirmed these. The randomized areas around them change how they play, so the classic spaces deliver familiar and new tactical experiences. The Slabs are also “fitted with military-grade weather simulation arrays” that can bring rain or snow, affecting visibility and other tactical conditions. Movement carries over from core Multiplayer, including climbing onto rooftops, containers, and balconies to reach sightlines at the cost of exposure.

Gunfight

Kill Block's headline mode is Gunfight, which now includes 3v3 and the new 10v10 format. Each round is single-life combat, and all players get the same randomly assigned weapons and equipment. The writer's favorite setup is when everyone starts with an RPG. Teams swap sides after the first round. After round two, the three Slabs shift to a new combination and players receive another random loadout. The combination changes every two rounds until one team reaches six wins. Custom loadouts are not available in Gunfight, so the focus stays on teamwork, weapon proficiency, and tactics. If neither team is eliminated before the round ends, an Overtime Flag deploys, and both teams must converge on it and capture it to win.

Kill Block is the headline, but the wider Multiplayer offering includes 12 grounded maps across diverse global locations, each with a distinct visual identity. Two returning favorites arrive shortly after launch. The settings range from a Korean fishing village after an amphibious assault to the top of a snow-covered New York hotel and a fugitive's hideout in a dense residential district. Ground War brings larger battles with armored vehicles across expansive maps and combined-arms warfare. There are also a quartet of smaller Gunfight maps, a full suite of Multiplayer modes and Hardcore variants, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint.
