Grok has launched a new feature called Automations that enables the AI assistant to execute tasks independently based on user-defined parameters. The functionality allows users to set up jobs that run autonomously, handling activities such as conducting research during off-hours or monitoring incoming emails for priority messages. The feature is now accessible through grok.com and the mobile applications for both iOS and Android platforms.
Setting Up Automated Tasks
Creating an automation follows a conversational format similar to standard chat interactions with Grok. Users can outline their requirements, upload relevant files for additional context, integrate connectors and specialized skills, and select an operational mode. Once configured and named, each automation executes as an independent request using the original instructions while processing current data.
Scheduling Options and Triggers
The platform offers flexible scheduling capabilities, allowing automations to run on various intervals including one-time executions, daily routines, weekday schedules, or recurring patterns on weekly, monthly, and yearly bases. Users can specify exact execution times according to their local timezone, enabling scenarios like receiving a morning briefing at 8:00 AM or setting monthly reminders for the first of each month.]
Email-based triggers provide an alternative activation method by monitoring incoming messages. When an email matches specified criteria such as sender address, recipient, or subject line parameters, the automation activates with that message serving as contextual input. Users can directly reference tools within their instructions using the @ symbol to ensure specific connectors are utilized during each execution cycle. A manual Run now option enables immediate testing of newly created automations.
Execution and Notification Management
When an automation initiates, Grok generates a complete conversation thread, performs the assigned work, and archives the results in a searchable run history. Users can review full conversation threads from previous executions or continue interactions from where the automation concluded. Notification preferences are customizable, with options for email alerts, app notifications, both methods simultaneously, or no alerts for those who prefer manual checking.
Automations can also be generated directly through conversational requests to Grok, such as instructing the assistant to monitor news sources daily for pricing-related content. The Automations page provides pre-built templates as starting points, and all automations support pausing, resuming, editing, or deletion at any time. Scheduled automations are accessible to all users, while email trigger functionality requires a SuperGrok subscription.
