Game-key cards are a new format that launched with the Nintendo Switch 2 system. If you're unfamiliar with them, here's how they work compared to other ways games are distributed for the console.

Physical game cards

Physical game cards are the traditional cartridge format that longtime Nintendo fans recognize. They contain full game data on the card itself—just insert one into your system and start playing. Physical cards can be purchased from retailers, come in cases for shelf storage, and are easy to lend to family and friends.

Digital games

Digital games download directly to your system via the Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Store website or mobile app, or through retailer codes redeemed on eShop. Players appreciate the convenience of a portable library with multiple games accessible at once.

Digital games require system storage or a compatible microSD Express card (sold separately) and are tied to the Nintendo Account used during purchase or redemption. To redownload a game later, you must log into the account that owns it. You can lend certain digital games to people in your Nintendo Account family group in person, without requiring a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Game-key cards

Game-key cards combine elements of both formats. They are physical cards that insert into your system and come in game cases, distinguishable by their label on the lower half of the case. However, unlike regular game cards, they don't contain full game data.

When you insert a game-key card, the game data downloads to your system (an internet connection is required only for the initial download). The game lives on your system or microSD Express card, similar to digital games. Importantly, the game is only playable when the game-key card is inserted—the card functions as a key to access the downloaded content.

Unlike digital games, game-key cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account, making them easy to lend. Hand a game-key card to anyone, and when they insert it into their system, the game data downloads automatically, just as it did for you.
