In today's Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct presentation, Nintendo announced a slate of products and events running through 2027, marking four decades of the iconic series.

Ocarina of Time Remake and Hardware

Series producer Eiji Aonuma showed the first gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2, confirming a Nov. 5 launch date. The remake features completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, and reworked camera and movement controls. The first print run of the physical version will include special packaging with textured foil cover art.

A week earlier, on Oct. 29, Nintendo will release the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition system, along with anniversary editions of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller (available with and without a display stand) and carrying case with screen protector, all featuring a Triforce design.

Accessories and amiibo

Two playable ocarinas are coming later this year: a standard version and an electric version from HORI that plays notes or entire songs at the press of a button. In the remake, players can hum one of Link's learned ocarina melodies within range of the Nintendo Switch 2's built-in microphone, and he'll perform the song in-game. New amiibo figures of Young Link and Young Zelda will launch in 2027 and unlock special in-game masks with retro graphics. The previously announced Mineru's Construct amiibo for Tears of the Kingdom releases Sept. 17.

ZELDA NOTES, a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App for compatible smart devices, is expanding support to Ocarina of Time. Features will include adventure tracking, location-finding challenges using hint images, a virtual ocarina, a daily quiz with over 2,000 total questions, and more.

Concerts and Museum Events

The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Concert series will tour globally in 2026, featuring music from across the franchise. A Japan tour kicks off in Tokyo in January, a North American tour begins in Chicago in February, a European tour starts in London in April, and an Australian tour begins in Melbourne in May. Nintendo Museum in Kyoto, Japan will join the celebration with a special 40th Anniversary ticket design (from Sept. 9), new photo ops (from Nov. 5), and the fall 2026 opening of the Super Family Restaurant, where visitors can dine surrounded by Link and other Nintendo characters. Museum activities will continue for one year.

Starting tomorrow, users of the Nintendo Today! smart device app can collect Legend of Zelda series digital cards daily, with calendar animations in the Zelda theme changing to feature games throughout the series.

Partner Collaborations

Several partner collaborations are planned. The LEGO The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Link & Epona set, a 1,750-piece collectible for adults, arrives in spring 2027. Hasbro's Legend of Zelda Electronic Master Sword, 27 inches long with more than 15 touch- and motion-activated sounds, also launches in spring 2027.

Fans can play Zelda games on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can explore the series' history through the Nintendo Classics libraries and Nintendo Music, available as a smart device app or via web browser.

A live-action The Legend of Zelda film from Nintendo, Arad Productions Inc., and Sony Pictures Entertainment will open in theaters worldwide on April 30, 2027. The original film is based on the stories, ideas, and concepts developed across 40 years of games.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time enhancements:

Visuals have been completely overhauled down to textures, with snappier actions, faster load times, smoother performance, refreshed sounds, and symphonic orchestral music. Jump and run freely with newly added button commands and improved Right Stick camera control. Characters are fully voiced during expanded cutscenes with more dialogue. The day/night cycle continues everywhere, even in towns. A “Threads of Time” feature displays story progress and objectives, with a tapestry gradually filling as the journey continues. Players can hum learned ocarina songs and the game will respond to compatible instruments.

ZELDA NOTES features for Ocarina of Time:

“Today's Record” provides a chronological daily log with stats like enemies defeated. “Gossip Quest” challenges players to find in-game locations using hint images to earn points toward music scores for the ocarina. Additional features include a virtual ocarina using the touchscreen.
