A cozy puzzle game filled with merry monsters and goofy ghouls, Fangtopia launches on PlayStation 5 on October 26, just in time for Halloween.
In Fangtopia, you build a world piece by piece by placing tiles onto a hex grid surrounding a creepy castle of your choice. There are no time limits, allowing you to carefully consider each placement and enjoy forming the world at your own pace. However, there is a tile limit, requiring strategic play to top the leaderboards and perfect your domain.
Tile Types and Scoring
Tiles come in six types: fields, towns, mountains, forests, railroads, and rivers (only in Ghoulish mode). Many tiles contain multiple terrain types. Connecting tile edges to matching terrain types scores points and advances objectives that appear during play. The results are visually cohesive—sprawling forests border towns, railways wind across fields, and yetis gaze down from mountain ranges. Every move can be undone if you're unhappy with a placement.
As you gain points, you're offered landmarks to place in your world, drawn from a collection that expands with playtime. Each landmark has a special objective that, once completed, awards new tiles for your deck. Placing a volatile volcano near a field surrounded by mountains, for example, increases your tile stack and lets you expand further.
Landmarks and Creatures
Landmarks range from otherworldly oaks and whirling windmills to frightful fountains and creepy carousels. A Stickerbook tracks all landmarks found, allowing you to inspect the playful details that bring these buildings to life.
As you place tiles, mysterious portals appear in the oceans around you. Opening these portals summons creatures—grotty gremlins, wily werewolves, bawling banshees, and more—each with a natural habitat. Placing creatures in suitable homes rewards you with bonus tiles to expand your world. Interacting with placed creatures may trigger spooky surprises.
Game Modes
Multiple play styles are available. Fangtopia mode includes all features and suits quick sessions. Ghoulish mode adds rivers as a tile type, lets you swap which tile to place next, and introduces larger tile groups that must be placed together. The tile stack is also larger in Ghoulish mode, creating longer, trickier sessions. The developer notes that more modes may emerge in the future.
Fangtopia is playable on PlayStation 5's main screen or on PlayStation Portal.
