Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve releases on October 2, 2026 for PS5. The first story trailer offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the crew aboard The Endurance amidst ongoing war, showcasing fierce battles against Sotoan ace squadrons and colossal superweapons threatening the Federation of Central Usea (FCU). Players will face new threats and uncover secrets as they progress through the campaign.
Dogfights remain central to the series' identity. Today's trailer highlighted a head-to-head battle between the Leader of the Elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit “Shadow 22” and Joker Flight, led by the “Wings of Theve.” Beyond aerial combat, players must also confront superweapons dominating ground and distant skies while leading their squad to victory.
Annihilation Battle Mode Returns
The franchise's returning Annihilation Battle mode was confirmed for the new installment. In this mission type, players undertake a counterattack against Sotoan forces, tasked with destroying all enemies and targets in sight.
The Annihilation Battle offers substantial freedom within a time limit. Players face key enemy facilities—including a solar power plant, oil tank, air base, and ammo dump—while using supply lines to replenish weapons mid-mission. This allows players to devise their own strategies, deciding which enemies to eliminate and in what order, as well as when to return to the “return line” to reload.
I believe this mission category best embodies the core pillar of the Ace Combat series: the player's ability to eliminate enemies based on their own judgment.
Chain Destruction and Environmental Strategy
Ace Combat 8 introduces new dynamics to Annihilation Battles through chain destruction mechanics. Like the large transport aircraft Podarge shown in previous trailers, players can trigger cascading destruction—hitting a flammable object like an oil tank can cause explosions that destroy surrounding buildings. Structures near where downed enemy aircraft crash may also be destroyed.
For example, if you hit a flammable object―such as an oil tank at an enemy base―and cause an explosion, you can also cause a chain reaction that destroys surrounding buildings.
The production team incorporated this consideration to add strategic depth regarding the order and timing of player attacks.
Major Threats
Megafloat Fatsia
The Megafloat Fatsia, situated off the west coast of the Republic of Sotoa, is a marine megafacility functioning as an artificial island. It serves as an arms factory and supply station for Sotoan landing invasions, constructed as part of a national project to develop coastal waters and provide housing to compensate for land lost to desertification.
The structure extends six kilometers with multiple layers, featuring a 2,000-meter runway capable of accommodating large transport aircraft. Its central block houses a power plant using Sotoan cold fusion technology, harvesting deuterium from seawater to fuel arms factories, synthetic fuel plants, and other facilities. Surplus power generates fresh water via desalination, delivered to the mainland by pipeline.
Defense systems are comprehensive: each area features automated systems linked to multifunction radar, with armament including CIWS, SAM batteries, and railguns equipped with cooperative engagement capability (CEC) to link with defensive aircraft and enable over-the-horizon attacks. UAVs surround the structure, acting as sensor nodes expanding the defensive radius to 400 kilometers.
Attack Satellite Tonitrus Spear
The Tonitrus Spear is a Sotoan satellite weapon based on a kinetic weapons project conceived by Yuktobania during the Cold War as a strategic alternative to nuclear strikes. Stationed at low-orbit altitude of 500 kilometers, it employs mass and gravitational acceleration to launch dense metal rods using pure kinetic energy, destroying targets across a wide radius without radioactive fallout. Aces must use tactical skill to slip through its attacks and dodge this weapon.
Additional unidentified enemies await discovery in the campaign mode when Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on October 2, 2026.
