Generative artificial intelligence became available to the general public in November 2022 and quickly evolved beyond being merely a technological curiosity. What began as entertainment — creating poems, answering unusual questions, or generating images in seconds — has become one of the greatest digital revolutions of recent decades.

In just a few years, the relationship between users and artificial intelligence has changed dramatically. What was once used occasionally has become a productivity tool present in workplaces, classrooms, and even the simplest daily activities. Today, asking AI to help write an email, summarize a document, or develop an idea has become commonplace.

The speed of this transformation is remarkable. AI-powered tools now serve hundreds of millions of users worldwide, while companies continue integrating their capabilities across virtually every industry. Using artificial intelligence is no longer a competitive advantage — in many professional and academic environments, it has become an expectation. The question is no longer “Why use AI?” but rather, “How can we work without it?”

From Innovation to Necessity

And there are good reasons for that.

Artificial intelligence has democratized access to information, made processes more efficient, and significantly increased human productivity. Today, a single tool can assist with software development, translate content in seconds, organize schedules, analyze complex data, and accelerate creative processes that once required hours of work. Its contributions to education, technological innovation, and professional development are undeniable.

The Cost of Convenience

However, there is another side of this transformation that deserves attention.

The more efficient these tools become, the less space seems to remain for the discomfort of thinking. Researching, reflecting, experimenting, and developing solutions have always been essential parts of the human creative process. Artificial intelligence has shortened much of that journey — and that is not necessarily a problem. The problem begins when optimization turns into dependency.

Gradually, ideas are no longer developed from the ground up but merely refined. Questions are no longer answered through individual reflection before being directed to an algorithm. Not because people are incapable of doing so, but because a faster alternative is readily available.

Technology has always existed to enhance human capabilities, not to replace them. Calculators did not eliminate mathematics, just as search engines did not eliminate curiosity. Artificial intelligence does not have to replace critical thinking either, provided it remains a tool rather than becoming a mandatory extension of human reasoning.

Perhaps the greatest risk posed by artificial intelligence is not what it will be capable of doing in the future, but what we may stop doing for ourselves because of it.

In an era where answers are produced in seconds, perhaps the most important question is also the simplest one:
