WhatsApp has announced the introduction of usernames, a privacy-focused feature allowing users to connect with others without disclosing their phone numbers. The messaging platform, which serves over three billion users globally, will begin rolling out the functionality later this year, with early reservations opening this week.
The Privacy Challenge of Phone Numbers
Phone numbers have long been considered sensitive personal information, linked to numerous aspects of daily life. For individuals meeting new acquaintances—whether classmates, neighbors, or people encountered at social gatherings—sharing this detail can feel premature. The same concern extends to group messaging scenarios, such as joining parent chats for children's sports teams, where users may hesitate to distribute contact information to unfamiliar individuals.

Early Reservation System and Username Selection
The company has opened early reservations to address the inevitable overlap of preferred names across its massive user base. This advance reservation period ensures all users have an equal opportunity to secure their desired username. The platform includes a username generator tool for those requiring assistance in creating a unique identifier. Additionally, content creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim existing Instagram or Facebook usernames to maintain consistency across Meta's platforms.
Enhanced Privacy Features and Functionality
The username system incorporates several privacy safeguards. The platform will not feature a searchable directory or suggestion system—potential contacts must know the exact username to initiate communication. WhatsApp has also developed an optional username key feature, providing an additional layer of control over who can establish contact. Once the feature launches, users who enable usernames will have their phone numbers hidden from new contacts and businesses during initial conversations.
Access and Rollout Timeline
Users can reserve usernames through the latest version of WhatsApp by navigating to Settings, then Account, then Username. The feature will deploy gradually over the coming months, with in-app notifications alerting users when usernames become available in their respective countries.
