College students use Gemini for far more than homework. Google asked 15 Google Student Ambassadors to share their favorite Gemini features and how they use them to study smarter, learn faster, produce better work, and stay organized. Their answers cover 11 features, from study notebooks and Gemini Live to Deep Research and connected Google apps.

Studying with notebooks, guided learning, study guides, and quizzes

Study notebooks turn course materials into personalized, bite-sized lessons. Beverlyn T. of the University of Southern California says they “make studying more manageable, especially right before finals when I have a semester's worth of material to review.” Nina R. of UC Santa Barbara says they have made refreshing her memory on 50-page papers before class “so much faster,” and that uploading competing viewpoints lets you “quickly generate comparisons and master complex concepts.”

Guided Learning is designed to build understanding instead of just giving answers. Fehmaan K. of George Mason University pastes in his work, and Gemini walks him toward what went wrong by asking what he thinks happens at each step. His advice: “Guess even when you're unsure. Because getting corrected will stick with you more than reading an explanation.”

Gemini can also turn your notes into ready-made study guides. You can upload lecture slides or handwritten notes and tell Gemini what to include. Jamie C. of USC says this helps when professors don't provide exam overviews, and recommends dedicating a Google Drive folder to each class and sharing it with Gemini, so the guide “captures both the professor's content and your interpretations.”

For self-testing, Gemini can generate custom quizzes. Shuang P. of New York University says, “Practice quizzes help me build confidence going into high-stakes tests.” When teachers provide practice tests without answer keys, Tobi U. of UC Riverside uses Gemini quizzes to check work: “It helps understand what questions I might miss or misinterpret.”

Talking and listening: Gemini Live and Audio Overviews

Gemini Live lets you chat with Gemini using just your voice. Skylar E. of San Diego State University uses it to practice interviews and presentations “because it lets me hear how my ideas actually sound.” Other students talk through tough concepts on the go or practice new languages before studying abroad. You can also turn on your camera to show Gemini what you're looking at. Debbie C. of The University of Texas at Austin says that when she gets stuck on a new tool, “I can have Gemini Live walk me through it step-by-step.”

Audio Overviews create podcast-style conversations from documents, slides, and more. Nina uses them for last-minute review sessions while walking across campus: “This lets me absorb things conversationally and take active notes while listening.” Parikshit M. of Rutgers University uploads articles with conflicting viewpoints. “The hosts naturally argue both sides of the issue,” he says.

Uploads, images, and the browser

Gemini student plans give you unlimited uploads of class materials, study notebooks, interactive visualizations, and images. Chaeyeon H. of Boston University says this helps her add context to her notes. Nicole F. of UC San Diego snaps photos of physical objects or things on her screen: “Whether it's a physical object or something on my screen, I can easily snap and upload a photo.” Some students upload a draft along with the assignment rubric to confirm they've met every requirement before submitting.

Nano Banana, Gemini's image generator, can help you visualize ideas and design graphics. Nelson G. of Morehouse College finds it helpful for formatting images and sharpening details. Beverlyn uses it to make club flyers and social media posts: “It turns my ideas into eye-catching visuals tailored closely to my style.”

Gemini in Chrome brings assistance directly into your browser. Megan J. of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign says it makes reviewing wrong exam answers more efficient, because she doesn't have to copy and paste them into a Gemini chat. Fehmaan recommends it for narrow questions like “What does this specific sentence mean?”

Research and organization

— Google

Deep Research can automatically browse up to hundreds of websites, think through its findings, and create multi-page reports in minutes. You can talk through the findings on the go with Gemini Live. Annitha K. of San Diego State University uses it to compile market analyses and literature reviews, and first has Gemini brainstorm a tightly structured research prompt.

Connecting Gemini to Google Drive, Google Calendar, Gmail, and Google Sheets can help you stay organized. Skylar has Gemini find every assignment and due date in her class syllabi and organize them in Calendar. Aaryaman B. of Michigan State University has Gemini log all his tasks in a master tracking Sheet “so I start each morning organized.” Megan, a teaching assistant, uses Gemini to find student emails she needs to respond to or follow up on, “saving time and helping me be a more present educator.”
